Much Ado About Nothing (Or Not)

The list of melamine-infused China products have just lengthened. According to the AVA website, we now have a grand total of EIGHT products with melamine in it. But for the kiasu Singaporean, here's a list of products taken off the shelves.

NOTE: Expensive ≠ Good Quality. Look at the DREYERS brand. It's a really $$$ brand of ice cream and yet it's up there anyway.

Now that's a lotta food eh? Actually, it's not really a cause for alarm. Most people tend to have the impression that consuming a few sweets/bottles of milk would result in a kidney stone. But really, it's kinda like a storm in a teacup.

I did a lil' bit of research and was rather amused by these tidbits found in the AVA's media release.

To Fall Ill, An Adult (60KG) Must Consume:
- 13 packs of Silang - House of Steamed Potato Crackers daily over a lifetime or
- 47 pieces of White Rabbit Creamy Candy daily over a lifetime (Wingyan, TAKE NOTE! XD) or
- 644 ml of Dutch Lady Honeydew Flavoured Milk daily over a lifetime or
- 7 bars of YiLi Choice Dairy Fruit Bar Yogurt Flavoured Ice Confection daily
over a lifetime or
- 520 pieces of 徐 福 记 Puffed Rice Rolls - Butter Corn Flavour daily over a lifetime

Like Hell anyone'll eat that much within a day for the rest of his/her life. Although there're rare individuals exception to that reasoning (particularly this pig I know..), most of us should be safe from malanmine poisoning. SHOULD BE.

When you think about it though, these truth about these products only came to light AFTER the China Milk Powder Poisoning sparked off extensive testing. For all you know, many more of the stuff eaten everyday contain melamine. The coffeeshop auntie brewing kopi could have brought her condensed milk from China. McCafe might be secretly buying cheaper supplies (with parts from China). YOUR MOM could have unknowingly used supposedly non-China dairy foods which have melamine additions.

Even if one avoids the listed foodstuff, it doesn't completely ensure there wouldn't be the slightest trace of melamine in the body. Everything adds up, y'know. What they didn't list down is not necessary what is safe. ALL foods have artificial chemicals in/on them (Except for those overly pricey organic shit). Personally, I don't see any point in losing your head over this. We'll more or less ingest some lethal-in-huge-amounts chemicals on a daily basis. Heck, we BREATHE these substances in daily. Avoiding a little of this and that isn't going to work out properly. If you must avoid, be CONSISTANT. Go live in the Himalayas or some other remote mountain as a hermit and grow your own dammed food. By hand. Coz metal/wood tools could have been coated with toxins from the surrounding air.

Anyway, my family eats the House of Steamed Potato Crackers sometimes. We have 13 packs in storage now and my mum forbade me from even nibbling a crumb. In fact when she watched the news, she freaked out and woke my grandma up to warn her to quit eating the crackers. She eats them everyday, btw. For the elderly, I'll agree that it is more advisable for them to stop. But it's such a waste of food to just toss all of them out.

My ever-so-thrifty grandma'll probably be rather upset about having to waste food.

And with the over-caution of dairy products, I'll probably wouldn't get my regular ice cream/milkshake/chocolate fix as easily now thanks to my mum. Oh! What Can I Use To Tide Over The O'Levels Now?
